I was introduced to babywearing by a woman I met at my son’s preschool. We both had older children in the preschool and new babies under 9 months old. We would wait together in the hall for the children to be released at the end of the day. My child would get fussy when we had a long wait, but not hers. She would have her infant in a cloth made carrier that I later found was called a ring sling. He seemed so pleasant and just loved being close to her. I became interested in the concept of babywearing. My son was about 5 months older and was a bit chunkier than the norm. She invited me over to try her sling before I invested in one for myself. My son took right to it. I could not believe how easy it was to use and how much he enjoyed being in it. It was not constricting on his chubby legs and there were no cumbersome snaps or clips to fool with. This was a godsend, finally there was something comfortable for me to carry him in to soothe his crying spells and also comfortable for him. Other benefits of babywearing are:
· That the baby is able to observe the world from the safety of mom’s arms, thus stimulating brain development. · The baby’s need for motion and contact is met. A sling recreates the womb environment. It’s extremely comforting for a baby to hear mom’s heartbeat, feel her warmth and to move with mom just as they used to in the womb. · Babywearing also benefits better digestion with gentle tummy pressure. · That mom is able to do daily chores while still being able to tend to baby. · Breastfeeding with baby in sling. Freeing moms arms up for other things.
Thanks to my dear friend Hilary for introducing me to the world of babywearing. |
